"All of which is to say that if your happy place, musically speaking, is the indie-rock underground of the 80s & early 90s, Did You Die is your new favourite band "
- John Lucas , The Georgia Straight
"Did You Die combine rocking bass riffs, intense drum grooves, and guitar chords that sounds like they’re imploding to create a huge wall of sound-yet not without injecting some kind of individuality!"
- Ryan Domingo, Vancouver Weekly
Did You Die is a mixed gender indie band hailing from Vancouver, BC. The band’s music blends shoegazer dream like atmospherics, where guitars battle anywhere from a dream like shimmer to a buzz-saw postpunk freak out.
Conjure this hybrid with a splash of psych rock, hook-line-and-sinker type choruses and the powerful yet ethereal vocals of Richie Felix Alexander (vocals, guitar) and Katherine Kovna (vocals, guitar) et al, makes up the bands sound. Did You Die is rounded out by bassist Roz Jeffery and drummer Ian Browne, known best for his tenure in the Matthew Good Band.
The band’s initial approach was very grass roots. In 2015 they released ‘Weird Love’ on cassette through Burger Records off shoot label Wiener Records. The cassette managed to find it’s way into the hands of John Kastner (of Doughboys fame) who excitedly had Did You Die open for Swervedriver. The band has been off the the races ever since.
Shortly after that, Did You Die was invited to play the highly touted Levitation Festival. The band went on to share the stage with the likes of Nothing, Sunflower Bean, Yuck, The Lemon Twigs, No Sun, Frankie Rose, Winter, LSD & The Search For God, SIANspheric, Mystery Machine and Wrong during the Weird Love era.
In October of 2018 the band released their debut album, ‘Royal Unicorn’ on Blew//Rose. The album was made available on vinly, CD and digital format. Produced by Felix Fung (Chains Of Love, Spectres) and engineered by Jordan Koop (dead Soft, The Courtneys), the band took it to the next level.
Completing 2 Canadian tours, One US tour and an appearance at CMW where the band supported Black Mountain and Trail Of Dead. During their US tour, the band made an appearance at Seagaze Festival in Seattle where they not only dazzled the sold out festival, but impressed enough people at that festival as well as shows in California, to be able to start talks with bigger US acts who want to take them on their upcoming tours.
The band has gained over 10K monthly followers on Spotify, 15K followers on Instagram, over 50K views on two videos released from Royal Unicorn. During their CMW appearance Did You Die hooked up with producer Dave Genn of 54-40 and Matthew Good Band fame, to record new material in September of 2019. The band has sold out of 500 ‘Royal Unicorn’ physical LPs in under one year, as well as, countless merch runs.
Needles to say Did You Die is one of the most prominent, exciting and experienced unsigned bands with a ton of momentum going today. The band is currently planning their next tours and follow up to ‘Royal Unicorn’. If they are not on your radar, they are now. Don’t miss the boat on this one.
